Diezani: EFCC grills ex-NNPC chiefs

The four are said to be under investigation by officials of the Subsidy Unit of the EFCC and their counterparts from the National Crime Agency of the United Kingdom in relation to the former minister’s case.Anti-graft investigators with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission are currently interrogating a former managing director of one of the subsidiaries of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation and three former executive directors of the oil corporation under ex-Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke.

The PUNCH learnt on Sunday that the ex-NNPC MD and the three former EDs had already been directed to be reporting to investigators.

The four were said to be “very close” to Alison-Madueke while in office.

An EFCC source said the ex-minister might appear in court on Monday (today).

“The man has been sacked now. He has been reporting to the EFCC since. Even three former executive directors are also reporting to the EFCC to tell the agency what they know about the NNPC funds,” a top official of the anti-graft agency said.

Check however indicated that the former MD being investigated was not among the oil barons that were picked up in the UK for alleged complicity in the money laundering case against the former minister.

It was further gathered that security agents were also probing an estranged ally of the former minister and two others in the UK.

The UK authorities have been keeping the identities of the affected people in line with their practice of keeping the identities of those arrested until they are taken to court.

Our correspondents could not get the Head of Media and Publicity of the EFCC, Mr. Wilson Uwujaren, on Sunday as calls to his mobile telephone line indicated that it had been switched off.

But a top operative of the EFCC said on Sunday that the EFCC investigation into the activities of the NNPC was not just about Alison-Madueke.

The source said that more people could be grilled in relation to the probe of the corporation.

The source added that the UK Police, which had been monitoring the former minister for close to two years, had “something substantial” before moving against her.

Meanwhile, a former Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Alhaji Abubakar Tsav, while speaking on the recent arrest and bail of Alison-Madueke, dismissed insinuations that the President Muhammadu Buhari administration was out to settle political scores.

Tsav, who spoke on the telephone with one of our correspondents, noted that the former minister lived like she was above the law.

Tsav cited Alison Madueke’s refusal to appear before the National Assembly to answer charges of malfeasance levelled against her as evidence of her “arrogance” and disdain for the legislature and the country’s laws.

He said, “When (ex-President Goodluck) Jonathan was still in power, the National Assembly invited her several times to answer questions on some of these issues but she never honoured any of the invitations.

“Even when the former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, now Emir of Kano, Lamido Sanusi, made the allegations that US$20bn was not accounted for; she refused to appear before the National Assembly.”

Tsav said Nigeria had had the privilege of having credible women such as Gambo Sawaba, Margaret Ekpo and Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, who fought for the good of society and wondered why it had become increasingly difficult to replicate their outstanding performances.

He described as embarrassing the fact that Nigeria still depended almost completely on the British police and its criminal justice system to bring our corrupt public officials to book, 55 years after our independence.

According to him, corruption is more than anything else responsible for the inability of our criminal justice system and our anti-graft agencies to act decisively over the past few years.

Tsav said, “Our anti-corruption agencies in Nigeria are not effective, apparently because there is too much political interference.

“In the case of (ex-Delta State Governor James) Ibori for instance, they found him not guilty in Nigeria but he was arrested, prosecuted and convicted in the UK.

“These agencies are either corrupt themselves or their activities are being interfered with by politicians. But I would rather believe that they themselves are corrupt and they are not willing to perform their duties very well.”

Comply with directive on Treasury Single Account by Sept 15 or face sanctions- Buhari tells govt agencies

President Muhammadu Buhari has set a deadline of Tuesday, September 15, 2015 for full compliance with his directive that all revenue due to the Federal Government or any of its agencies must be paid into the Treasury Single Account (TSA) or designated accounts maintained and operated in the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), except otherwise expressly approved. A circular issued to all Ministries, Departments and Agencies of the Federal Government by the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Mr. Danladi Kifasi urged the MDAs to ensure strict compliance with the deadline to avoid sanctions. The circular – HCSF/428/S.1/125 of September 4, 2015 noted that a number of MDAs were yet to comply with Circular Ref. No. HCSF/428/S.1/120 of August 7, 2015 which conveyed President Buhari’s original directive on the payment of all Federal Government revenue into a Treasury Single Account.

“In this regard, His Excellency, Mr. President has directed that all MDAs are to comply with the instructions on the Treasury Single Account (TSA) unfailingly by Tuesday, September 15, 2015.
“Heads of MDAs and other arms of Government are enjoined to give this Circular the widest circulation and ensure strict compliance to avoid sanctions,” Mr. Kifasi wrote.

Muslim Flight Attendant in US Placed on ‘Administrative Leave’ for Refusing to Serve Alcohol

A Muslim flight attendant who works with American airline, ExpressJet, has been placed on administrative leave, following her refusal to serve alcoholic drinks to passengers.

The attendant, Charee Stanley, said her refusal to serve alcohol was in due to her Islamic faith, CNN reports.

Upon receiving news about her mandatory leave, Stanley proceeded to file “a discrimination complaint with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission on Tuesday for the revocation of a reasonable religious accommodation.”

Speaking on the issue, Lena Masri, an attorney with Michigan chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations said, “What this case comes down to is no one should have to choose between their career and religion and it’s incumbent upon employers to provide a safe environment where employees can feel they can practice their religion freely.”

Reports also state that Stanley, 40, started working for ExpressJet nearly about years ago. About two years ago she converted to Islam. She later on learned this year that her faith prohibits her from not only consuming alcohol but serving it, too.

It was based on this premise that she refused to serve alcohol. She subsequently approached her supervisor on June 1 and was told to work out an arrangement for someone to fulfill passenger requests for alcohol.

According to reports the arrangement was working until another flight attendant filed a complaint against Stanley on August 2nd, claiming she was not fulfilling her duties by refusing to serve alcohol.

From Lagos to South Africa…DJ Cuppy Rounds off 8 Nation Tour in Grand Style!

After 8 stops in 8 major African cities, Nigerian producer and Disc Jockey, DJ Cuppy’s ‘Cuppy Takes Africa’ Tour has come to an end following a sold out final show in Johannesburg, South Africa on the 29th of August.

The South African stop of the tour kicked off with a media tour to some of South Africa’s biggest media houses including Trace TV and YFM Radio.

The final show of the tour held at Club Harem, Johannesburg featuring DJ Cuppy’s signature ‘Water and Fire’’ themed performance of the ‘Cuppy Takes Africa tour’, and guest appearances by Emmy Gee and Da Les.

Super Eagles coach Sunday Oliseh says Mikel Obi refused to pick his call in London

Chelsea midfielder Mikel Obi was not invited by the new Super Eagles coach Sunday Oliseh to play in the forthcoming 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Tanzania. Asked why Mikel was left out of his list, Oliseh said he called Mikel several times but he never responded or called him back

“I went to England on a Thursday and Chelsea was just coming back. We had fixed our visit to coincide with the end of their tour before they played Arsenal. I contacted Obi Mikel, called him on several occasions with no reply; sent him an SMS with no reply, went to London where he plays in the same club with Victor Moses. Pastor Mathew Asuquo, a resident of Ajegunle community in Lagos state has petitioned the Lagos state police command over the repeated attack on his family by one of his neighbors named Jane Osasa. Pastor Asuquo in his petition alleged that Jane had repeatedly attacked his family and nothing had been done to get her arrested even when he reported the case to the Ajeromi police station.

According to him, Jane who is known as Iron Lady in their community, had an argument in their compound with his wife, Cecilia on Mach 20th and while they were arguing, Jane allegedly stabbed his wife with a kitchen knife on her forehead. It gets more gruesome...*graphic photo after the cut*

He said he reported the case at the Ajeromi police station but Jane wasn't arrested neither was anything done to caution her. He said a similar incident happened on June 13th when the said Jane stabbed his daughter, Peace, on the neck. He reported the matter again to the Ajeromi police station but nothing was done. A third incident happened on August 8th when the same Jane attacked his niece who was on holiday in his house. Going by his previous experiences, he refused going to the Ajeromi police station and so he decided to go to the Area B Command in Apapa where he met a certain CSP Lukas who gave him a letter and referred him back to Ajeromi Police station. Officers at Ajeromi Police station after receiving the letter, picked up Jane who they detained and said will be charged to court the next day but was however released later in the evening.

He said on August 11th, the day his family and Jane were to appear in court, Jane along with her husband and one of her relative known as Danger, set his only son, Mathew, ablaze. He is demanding for justice. The person who shared the story - Iboro Tonye-Edet - said the boy, pictured below, has since died. He died on the 19th of August after succumbing to his wounds.
