World No. 28 Fognini ended Rafael Nadal’s 52-match winning streak in semi-finals on clay on Saturday with a 1-6 6-2 7-5 success en route to Sunday’s final.
Second seed Ferrer reached the final with a 7-5 6-1 win over Austrian Andreas Haider-Maurer. He twice broke Fognini’s serve in the opening set, and secured a decisive break in the fourth game of the second.
“It was my best match of the tournament and I’m very happy having won two tournaments this season,” Ferrer said.
